Job purpose The role involves undertaking ecological work to contribute to our mission of creating a Wilder Somerset!
Hours Full time (37.5 hours per week)
Contract Seasonal (6 months, 1st May – 31st October 2024)
Salary £22,300-£26,460 (pro rata)
Working relationships
Internal: First Ecology and Somerset Wildlife Trust staff.
External:  Clients, (sub) contractors, suppliers, stakeholders, statutory body representatives and members of the public.


Technical responsibilities (key tasks)

  • Ecological clerk of works: undertake on-site surveys, implement agreed mitigation actions, complete audits, and provide advice to contractors to enable compliance with ecological method statements.
  • Land management (optional): undertake practical habitat creation, management and removal tasks, and implement protected species mitigation, compensation and enhancement measures.
  • Protected species (badger, beaver, bird, bat, great crested newt, hazel dormouse, reptile, water vole and otter): assist with preliminary assessments, undertake presence or likely absence surveys, inform mitigation compensation and enhancement strategies and help prepare reports.
  • Other habitats: assist with the categorisation of habitats and complete higher level and project specific botanical surveys.

General responsibilities

  • Administration: use the systems in place to allow cohesive and efficient team working (e.g. time and financial recording systems)
  • Policies: comply with all policies and procedures of First Ecology (e.g. health and safety).

  • Other: carry out other duties relevant to the post as reasonably required.


To succeed in this role you will need to demonstrate:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent standard or have relevant work experience.
  • Outdoor First Aid.
  • Fit for work certified.
  • Protected species licences.
  • Operator tickets (e.g. brush cutter, chainsaw).
  • CSCS card (or capable of attainment).
  • Member of CIEEM
Experience /


  • Experience of working within a consultancy or professional role.
  • Customer service experience including communication with customers via telephone, email and in person.
  • Experience of working with contractor gangs undertaking habitat removal works.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Highly competent in the use of Microsoft Office programs like Word and Excel.
  • Ability to problem solve by proposing potential solutions rather than highlighting issues.
  • Strong organisational and forward planning skills and ability to work towards reoccurring monthly/annual deadlines.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of environmental issues.
  • Proven ability to manage personal time according to a fixed budget.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake practical manual tasks outdoors in safe weather conditions and during and/or during anti-social hours.
  • Acute attention to detail being able to execute all tasks accurately without error.
