The aim of the preliminary ecological appraisal training course is to introduce the knowledge and skills required to deliver commercial surveys in accordance with best practice guidance.
Professional practice: ethics and conduct, competence and judgement.
Information requirements and adequacy: establishing the aims and objectives of survey.
Methods of ecological investigation: available guidance, data searches, survey planning and site visits including recognition of common habitat types and associated protected species.
Ecological reporting: non-technical summaries and record of net loss and gain, providing certainty and clarity for the decision-maker, identifying limitations, declaration of compliance with professional code of ethics or conduct, disclosure of scientific method, presentation of original field results and raw data, ecological impact assessment and the mitigation hierarchy.
