Badger sett exclusions: timescales

banner-badger-sett-creationThe process of excluding badgers from an active sett can have significant lead-in times and is seasonally restricted. Therefore an awareness of the key survey, licence and mitigation periods is essential to successful project delivery.

 

Preliminary badger surveys can be undertaken throughout the year.

 

  1. Survey period: 1st January – 31st December.
  2. Survey deadline if sett exclusion is required: 30th September.

 

Sett monitoring surveys and bait marking studies can be undertaken throughout the year but must be monitored for an extended period up to four weeks.

 

  1. Survey period: 1st January – 31st December.
  2. Survey deadline if sett exclusion is required: 31st October.

 

Natural England and Natural Resources Wales operate a standard licence determination period of 30 working days.

 

  1. Licence receipt: 1st July – 30th November.
  2. Licence submission deadline: 31st October.

 

The installation of one-way gates across sett entrances which must remain in position for a period of 21 days from the last sign of badgers accessing the sett.

 

  1. Installation period: 1st July – 30th November.
  2. Installation deadline: 30th November.

 

The monitoring of one-way gates across sett entrances at least once every three days for signs of badgers entering or leaving the sett.

 

  1. Monitoring period: 1st July – 30th November plus 21 days from the last sign of badgers accessing the sett.
